Majid Al Futtaim, the exclusive operator of Carrefour in Kenya, has reaffirmed its commitment to social responsibility with a donation exceeding KES 5.9 million to three community-focused organizations. The funds aim to bolster education, digital learning, and social welfare, positively impacting over 31,400 students and 688 teachers across more than 151 schools.

Investing in Education and Digital Learning

The donation will support the following organizations:

  1. Roots Institute Centre in Mathare
Allocated KES 4 million, the Centre will construct a modern kitchen to serve meals to 700 students ranging from pre-primary to junior secondary. These students rely on the institution for free education, and the kitchen will ensure uninterrupted studies by addressing nutrition challenges.
  2. Kangemi Resource Centre
Awarded KES 1.2 million, the Centre plans to expand its computer facilities, benefiting 12,700 students, 88 teachers, and 88 schools. The enhancements will provide improved e-learning opportunities and advanced digital skills training.
  3. Kenya Connect
With KES 672,000, Kenya Connect will equip its library with books and other learning resources, supporting 18,000 students and 600 teachers in 63 partner public schools.

Championing Social Equity Through the Standard Chartered Marathon

In addition to these contributions, Carrefour Kenya sponsored the 21st Standard Chartered Marathon with KES 750,000. Proceeds from the marathon will benefit the Future Makers initiative, dedicated to reducing social and economic inequality by empowering underprivileged youth, women, and individuals with disabilities to learn, earn, and grow.

Remarks from Leadership

Christophe Orcet, Regional Director of East Africa at Majid Al Futtaim Retail, emphasized the company’s dedication to sustainable development, saying:
“Carrefour is dedicated to creating meaningful impact through strategic partnerships that align with our vision of empowering communities and driving positive social change. Our contributions to these projects reflect our continued commitment to promoting sustainable development across key sectors in the country. We believe that our success is closely tied to the well-being of the communities we serve.”

Ceremony Highlights

The donation ceremony was graced by representatives from the beneficiary organizations, including:

  • Constance Fromont, Donor Representative of Roots Institute Centre
  • James Musyoka, Co-Founder and Executive Director of Kenya Connect
  • Faith Doucette, Director of Partnerships and Mentorships at Kenya Connect
  • Esther Ndirangu, Program Manager at Kangemi Resource Centre

During the event, Constance Fromont shared the impact of the donation on their institution, stating:
“We are grateful for the timely donation especially since we currently do not have an optimal kitchen as the previous one was demolished. This will not only enable us to prepare meals for our students efficiently, but also ensure that their studies will continue uninterrupted.”
