The Maasai Market isn’t exactly a new concept to us. It is one of the great experiences locals and tourists can take part in. At these pop-up markets you can find paintings, curios, jewelry, sisal baskets, sculptures made from soft stone, Vitenges… most of which are hand-made in Kenya.

This week, we visited the Garden City Mall Maasai Market, and had a chance to talk to a few of the traders here, learnt about their craft, business, challenges, as well as their dreams and aspirations.

The Maasai Market moves around the city on different days of the week, and operates from 8am to 6pm. At the Garden City Mall, the market is open every Thursday, and has been operational for three weeks now.

Ms. Vivian, one of the market traders tells us the market was operational at the Mall five years ago. However, they had to stop trading after the mall’s management was changed. Ms. Vivian makes and sells jewelry (necklaces, earrings, and bangles) made from Brass, stones and cow horn. Her prices depend entirely on the design the client wants.

Most of the products at the Maasai Market are hand-made by the traders themselves. For most, the duration of production depends on what the client wants and availability of raw materials.

We also interacted with Mr. James Gachuhi, an artist whose art really is amazing. Mr. James uses white bedsheets and dye to create art pieces.

Some of the traders are hesitant on sharing their work on social media platforms for fear of having their designs/art work copied.

A common concern/challenge that was aired by most of the traders and artists was the creation of a space for artists to work/sell their products from. A permanent space that’s specially made for them to be creative, and earn a decent living from.
