You know that feeling when your team wins and suddenly the whole world feels like it’s on your side? That was my entire Sunday.

It started with Maureen’s invite to the Guinness Matchday at Al Capone, Thika Road. Manchester United vs Arsenal. After our win against City, I was that perfect mix of nervous and hopeful – you know, that edge-of-your-seat kind of energy that only football can give you.

I pulled on my United jersey (Miss J printed proudly on the back, thank you very much) and headed to catch a matatu at Lopha stage.

The Matatu Chronicles

The makangas spotted me immediately. “Eeeh Manchester United! Msupa wewe ni wa Manchester United!” one of them called out, grinning. “Niko na zawadi yako.”

I laughed it off. Sure, buddy.

But once I was seated, this guy actually came looking for me and handed me… a mango. A whole mango. As a gift. For being a United fan.The entire matatu erupted. Suddenly everyone had an opinion about the game. We had exactly two Arsenal fans on board (brave souls), and the banter was already flowing before we’d even reached Thika Road.

Al Capone Energy

Walking into Al Capone was like stepping into a football cathedral. Guinness, the Official Beer of the Premier League, had transformed the place into the ultimate viewing experience. Massive HD screens, crisp audio that captured every crunching tackle and triumphant ripple of the net, and that electric buzz of scores of passionate fans who’d come ready for war (the friendly kind).

The day kicked off with Crystal Palace vs Chelsea – the Blues absolutely dominated that London derby, brushing aside Palace 3-1 on their own turf. It set the tone perfectly: this was going to be a day of statement victories and high-stakes drama. But everyone knew we were all really there for the main event: table-topping Arsenal versus archrivals Manchester United.

My Lucky Entrance

And then? The moment I walked through the doors of Al Capone, Manchester United scored. The place exploded. The guys behind me jumped up: “Eeeh Miss J! Miss J umefika Man U wakascore!”

From that moment, I was convinced I was their lucky charm. Every time United pushed forward, I could feel the energy in the room shift. Arsenal fought back hard – this was a proper battle between two giants. Goals flew in from both sides, and by the time the final whistle blew, Carrick’s United had pulled off a stunning 3-2 victory against table-topping Arsenal.

The scenes. Absolute madness. The best kind.

The Beautiful Chaos

Manchester City’s fan Lotan Salapei brought the expert punditry, hyping up the crowd with live commentary and banter that had everyone on their feet.

The atmosphere was phenomenal – and I could see why Joy Murugi, Brand Manager for Guinness, was so hyped about it: “The energy at this Guinness Matchday has been phenomenal! I’m in awe of the passion that has been exhibited by fans from both sides of the high-stakes Arsenal vs Manchester United game. The fervor and energy displayed at Al Capone is the reason why Guinness Matchday exists; to bring together everyone who shares in our love for the beautiful game and perfectly chilled Guinness. We are grateful for the record attendance and will be hosting another spectacular matchday soon.”

She wasn’t exaggerating. Record attendance? Absolutely deserved.

Between the heart-stopping action, we had the Guinness Cleansheet challenge. I ranked number 74. Not my finest moment, but hey, I was too busy celebrating to care about trivia. The Guinness was perfectly chilled, the screens were unreal, and honestly? The whole experience was what football Sundays are supposed to feel like – pure, unfiltered joy with strangers who become friends because you’re all shouting at the same screen.

The Verdict

From a tout’s mango to a Manchester United masterclass, this Sunday reminded me why we do this. Why we wear our jerseys with pride, brave the matatus, and show up to scream at screens with complete strangers.

Looking back, I wish I’d said yes to making that bet with my friend Jimmy. I’d probably have been a few coins richer this week. Haha! But honestly, the bragging rights are just as sweet.

Guinness Matchday delivered an unparalleled, immersive experience that brought the Premier League to life right here in Nairobi. And with more exciting matchdays coming throughout the season, I’m already counting down to the next one.

This week’s pride and joy? Absolutely sponsored by the Great Manchester United.

See you at the next Guinness Matchday. 🍺⚽
