Kenya Cane, Kenya’s iconic spirit, has donated a 10,000-litre water tank to Kibumbu Caregivers, a women-led self-help group in Chuka, Meru County.
Dedicated to caring for children orphaned by HIV/AIDS, the group relies on fish farming as a sustainable source of income to support the children’s education and well-being. This donation will enhance their ability to maintain a consistent water supply for their fishponds, ensuring better yields and financial stability.
In addition to the water tank, Kenya Cane has provided essential water pipes and buckets, further securing a reliable water system for the group. This initiative aligns with Kenya Cane’s mission to empower communities through sustainable solutions that drive self-sufficiency.
“At Kenya Cane, we believe in celebrating everyday wins, and that means uplifting the communities that uplift us. Inspired by Diageo’s purpose of celebrating life every day, everywhere, we are honored to support the incredible work of Kibumbu Caregivers. We hope this contribution will have a lasting impact on the lives of these women and the children they nurture,” said Davis Changalwa, Brand Manager, Kenya Cane, Kenya Breweries Limited.
Caroline Karimi, Chairlady of Kibumbu Caregivers, expressed her gratitude, emphasizing the significance of the donation. “Our journey began with a shared commitment to supporting vulnerable children, particularly those orphaned by HIV/AIDS. This water tank will greatly improve our storage capacity, enabling us to harvest rainwater, sustain our fish farming, and secure income for the families we support,” she said.
The group, made up of over 30 women, was formed by grandmothers who took in their orphaned grandchildren after losing their children to HIV/AIDS. Faced with economic challenges, they turned to modern farming techniques, including fish farming, to create a sustainable livelihood.
Today, their agricultural efforts not only provide food for their families but also generate income to assist other vulnerable households within their community.
Kenya Cane remains dedicated to fostering economic empowerment and sustainable development, reinforcing its commitment to giving back to the communities that inspire and support its legacy.
